Chapter 16: We are ready for the home birth

We have decided to have a home birth and we've began preparations for it.

Week 37 appointment that we just had on 7th September was really great, the midwives have brought their own car to the island so that it is ready and waiting for them at the pier on “the day” and they brought a box of equipment that they will be using during the delivery of our little baby. We placed this in the baby's cot, next to the Baby Box where the little one can spend the first few nights in and right next to some towels and clothes that I selected for the birthing. I feel ready and the midwives are really well organised and prepared. We will even have two dedicated midwives on call just for us from week 39 (22nd September).

The midwives are ready and so are we! We ordered some more Red Tiger Balm rub which is helpful to relieve achy muscle pain which I am hoping will be useful for the labour stage, helping me avoid using medications for as long as possible or even at all. To that same effect I also started listening to some positive birthing affirmations videos on YouTube and have been reading The Positive Birth Book by Milli Hill - which is just awesome for getting emotionally and mentally ready for what’s to come. I would lie if I said I wasn’t scared or nervous, but I am also very excited and full of anticipation and love for the little baby! Whatever that day brings, I feel really ready for the birth!

It is perfectly safe for the baby to be born at week 37 so I'm extremely happy to have reached this stage! My Nan gave birth to my Mum (her first baby) at 7 months and then my Mum gave birth to me (her first baby too) at 7 months gestation, so I was worried that preterm labour might be hereditary. . . But I made it into the "safe zone" and am feeling so proud and happy!
