Chapter 4: Initial midwifery appointment
The midwifery appointments were set up and I was invited to meet the team in Kirkwall. My first “booking-in” appointment was on the 1st of March when I was 9 weeks pregnant. I met a midwife, who was going to be my midwife throughout the pregnancy. I really like her, she is young and has children of her own, which means she was fully aware and understood the process from the professional and personal angle. She was very professional yet comforting and full of advice. I felt that I was in really good hands.
James took a day off work and came to Kirkwall with me, which was really sweet! He insisted that this affects him just as much as it affected me and that he wanted to be involved in the entire process as we were pregnant together! Also, I do not enjoy trips to town so it was nice to have his company!

We met our midwife on our appointment at 2pm and spent a great deal of time answering questions about our lifestyle, discussing our family history, talking about our birth preferences and asking a barrage of questions. It was an enjoyable experience and we both felt the midwives really took their time to get to know us and explained the process really well. However, the clock was slowly approaching 3.30pm and we knew that our boat leaves at 4pm! They still had to take some bloods and we ended up rushing out of the maternity unit quarter to 4!
We had to run! I felt so weak and dizzy, having just lost a pint of blood, but I knew we had to make it to our evening boat, so we ran! James was running ahead, trying to stop the boat and I was trying my best not to get too far behind, but all our effort was in vain - the boat was slowly peeling off the pier the moment we got there. It was leaving without us and we were stuck in town!
Luckily, James organised an overnight stay at his friend’s house so we had a warm place to sleep and even snuck in a cheeky take-away dinner as a consolation for not getting back home. It took my body a long time to recover after the earlier sprint, but a nice meal and a comfy bed helped. Downside was that our two dogs were stuck at home, but we have some amazing neighbours who popped in and gave them food, walk and fuss. I am so grateful!

We got back home and life resumed its normal pace. I started taking better care of myself though - firstly by stocking up on a whole 9 month's worth of specialist pregnancy vitamins which the midwifes recommended and also starting to take some krill oil supplements for some added Omega 3 fatty acids.
