Ron is only 9 days old but has already outgrown his newborn outfits! Then again, he is eating so well, I am really not surprised he'd grown this much! Milestone: Newborn outfits outgrown Experience: First tummy time Tuesday 9th OctoberWe are still spending most of our time in the bedroom where I sit and work on my pregnancy and parenting blogs. For the sake of convenience, and to "help with drainage" as the midwife had put it yesterday, I set up a baby station next to me using two pillows. One pillow is placed side ways and another pillow is placed across it and one end on top, other end slanting downwards and creating a cosy space for the baby to lay down in. He is close enough to nurse and for me to keep an eye on. I remembered how good they say music is for little developing baby brain, so whilst I work and the baby sleeps nearby I play jazz and classical music, as well as my favourite songs and the good old all time classics. I usually just search for various tunes on YouTube but I also found that I particularly enjoy music from original composers Soothing Relaxation and Dr. SaxLove and also remakes of various modern songs done by Postmodern Jukebox. Milestone: Newborn outfits outgrown This morning as I was trying to change the baby, I noticed that the newborn outfits no longer fit him all that well. Once the bottom part of the onesie is done up, it pulls the gown from Ron's shoulders down, making him look half-naked! This was both a happy and a sad moment - I was proud of my baby boy growing so well but was also reminded that time was unavoidably passing us by and that my baby was growing up at the speed of light! It wouldn't be long until he walks, talks, joins the military, leaves home, gets married. . . Oh look, I am getting carried away again! Experience: First tummy time As I was changing the nappy, I noticed that Ron had some redness in his leg creases, so decided to put some coconut oil on the skin to prevent the chafing and irritation on the skin. I think I shall be using this as a natural barrier from now on, to try to mitigate the damage and prevent further irritation. It was a sign that it was high time for another bath! We didn't bother bringing the water tub into the bedroom this time, instead we heated up the bathroom and placed his baby bath into our large tub. It was a quick bath but we followed all same steps again, washing his face and head before dunking the rest of him into the water. Ron really loved it again, his little face looking so calm and relaxed! The bedroom was lovely and warm when we returned so we decided to let him dry off a bit, to prevent further chafing which I think may well have happened due to left over moisture (I clean him with water, but must not be drying him well enough?). Whilst he was crying off, we decided to do what they call "tummy time" which means placing the baby on their belly and letting them practice lifting their little head, thus exercising neck and back muscles. Back in June we have been gifted a small green waterproof play mat by out friends here on the island which was just perfect for this activity. As Ron laid there with his arms underneath him, face turned to the right side, trying to fathom this new perspective of the world we were watching him with excitement, encouraging him to look around and move, whichever way he was able. He was already impressing us daily with his toughness, strength and agility - he was such a tiny creature, yet so able (e.g. finding my breasts for a feed in the middle of the night)! What he did surprised us and gave me such a "proud mummy" moment! He bounced his head upwards, as he normally does when looking for a feed. The head bounced in place first, then he bounced it into the middle and then again, this time twisting to face the left side! I was so proud - there my little week-old baby was turning his head from one side to the other side, giving his neck and back plenty of exercise indeed! I was super proud! Once the tummy time was over and the baby was swaddled back up, it was time to take some pictures, which we sent to our family for their enjoyment. Auntie in Australia really loved the photos, pointing out that he had an awesome Gryffindor blanket, Harry Potter style! I had knit this blanked ages ago and, honestly, didn't think of it as anything other than red, gold and yellow - it is a classic combination and, more importantly, the wool that we had laying around in the house, so it was interesting and amusing to note this unintentional alignment with The Gryfindor house!
