Today, Ron put his best clothes on and met another island baby. . . Then we were bouncing, dancing and deciding which popular songs made good baby lullabies! Experience: Meeting with another baby Parenting: Choosing lullabies Thursday 18th OctoberToday was a very happy day that began, very appropriately, with Ron giving James a lovely beautiful toothless smile! A smile for daddy! He was such a happy chap, a joyful lad, our little bonnie Ronnie! Oh, I like how that sounds - bonnie is Orcadian for happy, so it fits really well. . . I should create a blog for Ron with that name!
I was going through the wardrobe full of 0-3 month clothes, in all shapes and sizes, realising that we only ever seem to use the onesies. . . The half-onesies with no arms or legs seemed a bit pointless to me, as we were in the cold part of the year. The outfits that fit over Ron's head seem unhygienic, as if he was to wet them through the nappy I would have to remove them over his face (which sounds horrible!). I decided to try out the separate outfits that we had - the t-shirts and trousers - and dressed my baby up in one of the fancy clothes. He looked so handsome and so grown up, but the t-shirt didn't happily stay in place, constantly rising upwards every time I picked my baby up. It just didn't feel practical, comfortable or enjoyable. . . So, later on, I packed all the clothes away, leaving only our favourite onesies out! Experience: Meeting with another baby Today my neighbour, who had her baby only days after I had Ron, popped in briefly to see me and to register her baby (I am the local registrar!). For a little while there were two babies in the house and, although both were sound asleep, I knew that they might grow up to be good friends. We agreed that arranging some "play dates" for the boys when they are a little older is a nice idea as they are of the same age and might enjoy each other's company here on a small island (there are only 3 or 4 other children under 5 on the island!). Later, we noticed that Ron was starting to lose his hand grip (Palmar grasp) reflex and would no longer automatically clinch his fist every time when presented with an object (he was beginning to be a little more selective!), so today we made the most of the games we could still play and presented him with a pen to hold. He looked so smart with a massive pen in his little hand! As the weather was holding up, James went to the local shop to get some supplies and left me and Ronnie bouncing on the big blue ball. The ball provides me with a great exercise and helps to wind Ron after a feed - a task which still remains complex and arduous for me! James has his "bouncy bouncy" methods and I tried all sorts of "whoosh whoosh whoosh" but nothing seems to be a sure-and-fool-proof-thing for helping my baby relieve the ingested air bubbles! I was bouncing on the ball when I realised that some up beat music in the background would be lovely to help me keep a good rhythm. The house was soon blaring the best of Abba, Queen and Michael Jackson as I was dancing around the room with my baby. Parenting: Choosing lullabies I feel it appropriate to say here that I do not know any baby lullabies and those that I do look up on Google sound horrible - "down goes the baby"?!, "humpty had a great fall"??, "mummy's gonna buy you a diamond ring"!!! I do not feel like promoting violence and tragedy or make promises I cannot keep, so I have been singing the songs I really enjoy. . . The good songs. . . My favourite songs. . . My list so far:
Whenever You Call - Mariah Carey Always Be My Baby - Mariah Carey Hero - Mariah Carey Butterfly - Mariah Carey Anytime You Need A Friend - Mariah Carey (can you guess my favourite artist yet?) The Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston I'm Alive - Celine Dion Nature Boy - Celine Dion Because You Loved Me - Celine Dion Love My Life - Robbie Williams Here I Am - Bryan Adams Three Little Birds - Bob Marley This list is to be continued, I am sure. . .
